EPF Wage Ceiling Raised to ₹25,000 (September 2026)
The Ministry of Labour and Employment has notified a higher EPF wage ceiling of ₹25,000 per month (Basic + DA), effective 17 September 2026, up from ₹15,000. The contribution rates are unchanged at 12% each for employee and employer. Separately, the EPF Scheme, 1952 and EPS-95 have been replaced by the EPF Scheme, 2026 and EPS 2026 under the Code on Social Security, 2020 (effective 29 June 2026), with the same contribution rates and pension formula. This calculator now applies the ₹25,000 ceiling to the 8.33% EPS diversion and to the EPS pensionable salary. Note that if your employer already deducts PF on your actual salary, your EPF deduction may not change; the ceiling mainly affects those whose contributions were restricted to ₹15,000.
How to Use This Calculator
This tool has three modes, covering the three retirement benefits most salaried employees in India are entitled to:
- EPF — projects the corpus you'll accumulate in your Employee Provident Fund account by retirement.
- EPF Pension (EPS) — estimates your monthly pension under the Employees' Pension Scheme.
- Gratuity — estimates the lump-sum gratuity payable to you at retirement or resignation.
Select a mode, fill in your salary, age/service details, and contribution rates, then click calculate to see your results, along with a year-wise growth breakdown for EPF.
How EPF, EPS, and Gratuity Are Calculated
EPF (Employee Provident Fund)
Both you and your employer contribute 12% of your Basic salary + Dearness Allowance (DA) each month. Your full 12% goes into your EPF account. Out of your employer's 12%, 8.33% (capped at a wage of ₹25,000) is diverted to the EPS pension fund, and the remainder goes into your EPF account. The balance earns interest, declared annually by the EPFO, compounded monthly.
EPS (Employees' Pension Scheme)
Your monthly pension under the Employees' Pension Scheme is calculated using the same formula that applied under EPS-95 (which was replaced by EPS 2026 in June 2026 with no change to the formula):
Monthly Pension = (Pensionable Salary × Pensionable Service) ÷ 70
Pensionable salary is your average monthly salary over the last 60 months, capped at the statutory wage ceiling (₹25,000 per month from 17 September 2026, up from ₹15,000). Pensionable service is your total years of contributory service, with 2 bonus years added if you've completed 20+ years. EPS requires a minimum of 10 years of contributory service and is normally payable from age 58.
Gratuity
For establishments covered under the gratuity provisions (Section 53 of the Code on Social Security, 2020, which replaced the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972 from 21 November 2025), gratuity is calculated as:
Gratuity = 15 × Last Drawn Salary × Years of Service ÷ 26
For establishments not covered under the Act, the divisor is 30 instead of 26. A service period of more than six months in the final year is rounded up to a full year. Gratuity is generally payable only after 5 years of continuous service (relaxed in case of death or disablement), while fixed-term employees qualify on a pro-rata basis after 1 year. Under the new Code, ‘wages’ for gratuity must be at least 50% of total remuneration, which can raise the payout for some employees. The statutory ceiling and tax-exempt limit remain ₹20,00,000.
Benefits of Using This Calculator
- Plan your retirement corpus. See how your EPF balance is projected to grow with salary increments and compounding interest.
- Estimate your pension income. Know roughly what monthly EPS pension to expect once you're eligible.
- Know your gratuity entitlement before resigning or planning retirement, so there are no surprises in your final settlement.
- Compare scenarios. Test how a higher voluntary EPF contribution or a longer working tenure changes your outcomes.
- One tool, three calculations — no need to hunt for separate EPF, EPS, and gratuity calculators.
Tips for Maximizing Your Retirement Benefits
- Consider Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) contributions above the statutory 12% if you want to build a larger EPF corpus — VPF earns the same interest rate as EPF.
- Avoid premature EPF withdrawals. Withdrawing early interrupts compounding and can also affect EPS eligibility if service is broken.
- Track your service length carefully for gratuity — crossing certain year thresholds can meaningfully change your payout.
- Keep your UAN and KYC updated with your employer to avoid delays when claiming EPF, EPS, or gratuity.
- Don't break service unnecessarily between jobs without transferring your EPF/EPS account, since continuity affects both pension eligibility and gratuity calculations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between EPF and EPS?
EPF is a provident fund where both your and your employer's contributions accumulate with interest and are paid out as a lump sum. EPS is a pension scheme funded by a portion of your employer's contribution (8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000), which pays a monthly pension after retirement instead of a lump sum.
Can I withdraw my full EPF balance before retirement?
After leaving a job, you can generally withdraw up to 75% of your balance soon after and the remaining 25% after 12 months of unemployment (the earlier waiting period was two months). The full balance is available at retirement. Partial withdrawals during service now fall under three simplified categories (essential needs, housing needs and special circumstances) and require at least 12 months of service. EPFO rules keep evolving, so confirm the current position on the EPFO member portal before applying.
Is gratuity taxable?
Gratuity received by government employees is fully tax-exempt. For private-sector employees covered under the Payment of Gratuity Act, gratuity is exempt up to ₹20,00,000 (or the amount calculated per the formula, whichever is lower); anything beyond that is taxable.
What happens to my EPS pension if I have less than 10 years of service?
If you have less than 10 years of contributory service, you're not eligible for a monthly pension. Instead, you can either claim a one-time withdrawal benefit from your EPS corpus (the amount depends on your pensionable salary and service duration, and the waiting period for this has been extended to 36 months) or take a Scheme Certificate so your service is carried forward if you join another EPF-covered employer.
Is gratuity paid even if I resign?
Yes, gratuity is payable on resignation as well, provided you've completed at least 5 years of continuous service with the employer (fixed-term employees qualify pro rata after 1 year). It isn't limited to retirement, layoff, or death.
