A free online calculator that looks and behaves like the calculator app on your phone — type a full expression such as 2+8×5+6÷3 and watch the answer update live below it, with correct order of operations (multiplication and division are always calculated before addition and subtraction). It also includes trigonometry, logarithms, powers, roots, factorials and more.
Online Calculator
A full scientific calculator with live results and correct order of operations
How to Use This Online Calculator
Type a full expression the same way you would on your phone's calculator — for example 2+8×5+6÷3 — and the answer appears live underneath as = 44 while you type. There's no need to press = after every step; keep entering numbers and operators to build a longer expression, and the preview keeps updating. Press = to lock in the final answer; it moves to a small history line above so you can start your next calculation fresh. Tap the History tab at any time to open a full list of everything you've calculated in this session — tap any past result to reuse it. Tap the arrows icon in the top-left corner to switch between the compact 4-function keypad and the full scientific keypad.
It Follows Proper Order of Operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS)
Unlike a simple calculator that computes left to right, this tool evaluates expressions the mathematically correct way: parentheses first, then exponents and roots, then multiplication and division, and finally addition and subtraction. For example, 2+8×5+6÷3 correctly evaluates the multiplication (8×5=40) and division (6÷3=2) before adding everything together: 2+40+2 = 44 — not 44 by coincidence of order, but by the actual rules of arithmetic.
Button Guide: What Every Key Does
New to a scientific calculator? Here's a plain-English explanation of every button, in the order they appear on the keypad.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| History | Tap this tab to open a list of every calculation you've done in this session. Tap any past result to load it back into the calculator and keep working with it. |
| 2nd | Unlocks a second function on some keys: sin/cos/tan become their inverses, lg becomes 10x, ln becomes ex, and √x becomes x². Tap again to switch back. |
| deg / rad | Switches trigonometry between degrees and radians. Tap to toggle; the label shows which mode is active. |
| sin, cos, tan | The three basic trigonometric functions, used for angles. Enter the angle inside the brackets, e.g. sin(30). |
| xy | Raises a number to a power. Enter the base, tap xy, then enter the exponent, e.g. 2 xy 5 = 32. |
| lg | Base-10 logarithm of a number, e.g. lg(100) = 2. |
| ln | Natural logarithm (base e) of a number. |
| ( ) | Parentheses group part of an expression so it's calculated first — useful for controlling order of operations, e.g. (2+3)×4. |
| √x | Square root of a number, e.g. √(9) = 3. |
| C | Clears the current entry so you can start a new calculation. |
| ⌫ (backspace) | Deletes the last character you entered, so you can fix a typo without clearing everything. |
| % | Converts the number before it into a percentage (divides by 100). Combine with an operator for discounts, e.g. 1200−10%. |
| ÷ × − + | The four basic operators: divide, multiply, subtract, and add. |
| x! | Factorial — multiplies a whole number by every whole number below it down to 1, e.g. 5! = 120. |
| 7 8 9 / 4 5 6 / 1 2 3 / 0 | The number keys, used to type any value. |
| 1/x | Reciprocal of a number (1 divided by that number), e.g. 4 then 1/x = 0.25. |
| π | Inserts pi (3.14159…), used in geometry and trigonometry. |
| e | Inserts Euler's number (2.71828…), the base of natural logarithms. |
| ↻ (shuffle icon) | Inserts a random decimal number between 0 and 1000, handy for testing or games. |
| . | Adds a decimal point to enter numbers that aren't whole, e.g. 3.5. |
| = | Calculates the final answer for the expression you've entered and saves it to your History. |
Why Use an Online Calculator?
- Correct math, guaranteed. Built-in order of operations means you'll never get a wrong answer from ambiguous left-to-right calculation.
- See your full expression. Unlike a basic calculator that only shows the last number, you can see and edit the entire equation before calculating.
- Scientific functions included. Trigonometry, logarithms, powers, and roots are all built in — no separate app needed.
- Always available. No installation, no sign-up, works in any browser on desktop or mobile.
- Works with your keyboard. Type expressions naturally for faster input on a computer.
Everyday Uses for This Calculator
- Homework and exams. Verify multi-step arithmetic, trigonometry, and logarithm problems instantly.
- Engineering and science. Quick access to trig functions, powers, roots, and constants like π and e.
- Finance and shopping. Calculate discounts, taxes, and running totals with correct percentage handling.
- Everyday math. Cooking measurements, trip planning, and any quick calculation that needs to be right the first time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculator follow BODMAS/PEMDAS rules?
Yes. Multiplication and division are always calculated before addition and subtraction, exponents and roots are calculated before that, and anything inside parentheses is calculated first — exactly like standard mathematical convention.
Can I switch between degrees and radians for trigonometry?
Yes. Tap the deg button (or use the menu) to toggle between degree and radian mode for sin, cos, tan and their inverses.
What does the 2nd button do?
It switches several keys to their alternate function: sin, cos and tan become their inverses (sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹, tan⁻¹), lg becomes 10x, ln becomes ex, and √x becomes x².
Is this calculator free and does it store my data?
Yes, it's completely free with no sign-up. Your calculations stay in your browser only for the current session and are never sent to a server.
Can I use this calculator on mobile?
Yes. It's fully responsive, and you can tap the resize icon in the top-left to switch to a simplified 4-function keypad that's easier to use on smaller screens.
What happens if I enter an invalid expression, like dividing by zero?
The calculator displays Error instead of a result. Press C to clear the entry and start again.
